Hardesty Rembers His Experiences
My stepfather was a very good friend of Louis Armstrong, who had given him a trumpet. I must have been about eight years of age. So during that period of time when carnival would come around, I would be on the porch on Claiborne and Louisiana and, every time a float would pass, I would get on the trumpet. During that time a very popular song was "The Music Goes Round and Round", and I would get out there and try to play that song.
The first time I went out on a gig, I was fifteen years old and we were on a stage in a movie theatre in Admite, Louisiana. One of the fellows gave me a drink which I thought was a soft drink and was especially tasty. When I got up to take my solo, I fell backwards into the movie screen and busted it. We ended up playing that night for free and even had to come up with extra money to help pay for the damages.
Afterwards I found out that I had been given "White Lightning".
